Cala d’Or
Cala d’Or is
sometimes used to refer to a whole line of hotels, resorts and
apartment complexes which stretch down Mallorca’s eastern coast.
However, the name is actually taken from just one small pretty cove
which lies some 50 kilometres to the east of Palma.
Hotel Cala d’Or
Built in the 1930s the Hotel Cala d’Or is located just next to the
beach which bears its name. A traditional Spanish building, the
hotel has 95 well equipped rooms (seven singles and 88 doubles)
fitted with standard modern furniture. All of the rooms come with a
balcony, either overlooking the sea or the rear garden. Indoor
facilities include a gym, sauna and Jacuzzi. Outside in the
well-tended gardens you will find a large heated pool, with a
poolside snack bar. There is another snack bar down next to the
beach. For a more substantial meal you can dine at the hotel’s
restaurant.

South Coast and
Colonia de Sant Jordi
Due to its lack of
beaches and rocky coastline, much of Mallorca’s south coast has not
been developed. However, one resort has prospered here - Colonia
de Sant Jordi. This town is a pleasant blend of new hotels and
apartments with an old picturesque seaport. From here you can take
a boat to the Island of Caberra (now a national park) to see its 14th
century castle and watch the island’s wildlife.
Hostal Colonia
This small one star
family-run hostel has both single and double rooms decorated with
basic modern furniture. The rooms are all fully equipped and come
with a bathroom, heating, air conditioning, and either a balcony or
terrace. Hostal Colonia also has a few apartments if you prefer to
self-cater.
Hostal Colonia has
a buffet-styled restaurant offering home-make cooking using fresh
local ingredients, much of which is home-grown. One delightful
aspect of this hostel is its ice cream parlour with its numerous
flavours of home-made Italian-style ice cream – a very enjoyable way
to cool off on a sunny afternoon. The hotel is closed from November
to March, although the apartments are open year round.
