Orient
Heading inland, south-east of Soller, there is the charming little hamlet of Orient. All around this ancient village you’ll find olive and almond groves covering the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The rural village of Orient (consisting mainly of local farmers) has been transformed in recent years by an influx of tourists who are drawn to this scenic and peaceful village.
Hotel Son Palou
Located in a 150 hectare rural estate, Hotel Son Palou is an ‘agroturismo’ (a mix of hotel and working farm). Surrounded by cherry and apple orchards, as well as cultivated fields and mountains, Son Palou is a picturesque place to stay. The well tended garden blends in with the larger estate to create a quiet and tranquil oasis.
The Hotel Son Palou was completely re-furbished in 2001, and the interior has a traditional Mediterranean feel. It has a mix of accommodation from standard double rooms to deluxe suites. All are well appointed, and the better rooms also have a terrace. Dinner is available at the hotel, as is breakfast, which is included with your room.
As the mountains are so close, trekking and cycling are popular activities at this hotel. There is a pool in the garden where you can cool off after a long day’s trekking.

L’ Hermitage
Set in a beautiful landscape, L’Hermitage started life as a stately home some 400 years ago. In the 1950s it was turn into a monastery. Nowadays it is a luxury four star hotel. L’Hermitage’s traditional Mallorcan interior (with white wall and antique furniture) creates a comfortable, re-fine atmosphere. Outside there is a lovely garden with terraces and a pool. There are 24 rooms at the hotel, four of which are in the original monastery. The rest are in chalets dotted around the premises. If you are taking a winter break, ask for a room with a fireplace to make your stay really special.
The well regarded restaurant at L’ Hermitage is in an old oil mill, where an ancient olive press take pride of place. The menu is Mediterranean and uses fresh local ingredients. You can eat inside the mill or by candle-light out on the terrace.

Alaro
On the southern slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains is the small town of Alaro – known its medieval castle. Although Alaro is in the heart of the mountains, Palma and its airport are just 25 kilometres away.
Hotel Can Xim
Located in the main square of the picturesque village of Alaro is the family-run Hotel Can Xim. There are just eight double rooms at this first-rate hotel, but they are all modern and well furnished in traditional Mallorcan style. There is a terrace (where you can eat) and a largish pool where you can relax and take a cooling dip. The menu at the hotel’s restaurant is primarily Mediterranean.

Deiá
A half an hour's drive from Palma, and only 10 kilometres west of Soller, is the popular and beautiful town of Deiá. Here the Serra de Tramuntana mountains come down to meet the Mediterranean Sea in dramatic fashion. Deiá is a stunning place with the Puig d’es Teix (a 1062 metre high peak) towering above the town. There is a thriving artistic community here. Classical music lovers should enjoy the Deiá Festival which runs from April to September.

Hostal Villa Verde
Based in a small stone building complete with traditional green shutters is the reasonably priced Hostal Villa Verde. Hand painted Mallorcan plates decorate the Hostel’s traditional interior. The rooms are simple and furnished in traditional Mallorcan style. The hostal has a great terrace in the back, where you can have a drink or breakfast with great views of Puig d’es Teix.

Hotel Costa d’Or
Just two kilometres out of Deiá is the recently modernised Hotel Costa d’Or. This four star hotel is splendidly situated overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and surrounded by olive and palm trees. It offers a range of excellent modern accommodation. Most of which are double rooms, though there are a few superior double rooms which have either a balcony or terrace. There is one suite – complete with plasma TV.
The facilities are top notch with a large pool overlooking the sea, a tennis court and a gym. The terraced bar also serves snacks if you are a bit peckish. A more substantial meal is available from the Costa d’Or’s restaurant. Closed November to March.

Hotel Es Molí
Perched on the edge of the coastline, with some gorgeous sea and mountain scenery is the luxurious Hotel Es Molí. The hotel’s expansive well tended gardens are filled exotic plants and citrus trees, as well as the more than 1,000 year old olive trees. This four star hotel is a graceful stone building which spreads down towards the water through its lovely terraced garden.
There are 87 plush modern rooms, most of which come with a balcony or terrace and have a view of either the sea or the mountains. There is more than enough to keep you busy here, including a tennis court, swimming pool, table tennis as well as a hair and beauty salon. It is also a good sight for walkers. If you want to explore the waters in the rocky coves beneath Hotel Es Molí you can always borrow some snorkelling equipment.
Es Molí has one bar up in the main building and one down by the pool. You can dine either inside or on the terrace in the hotel’s a la carte restaurant. There is live dinner music in the restaurant and dancing in the evening. Open April to October.

S’Hotel D’es Puig
This small family run hotel is centrally located in Deiá and has tremendous charm. The traditional stone building houses an elegant hotel tastefully decorated in warm Mediterranean colours. The hotel has mainly double rooms, some of which have a balcony with stunning views of the mountains. If you prefer something bigger, S’Hotel D’es Puig also has good-sized apartment suites with a kitchenette, so you can self-cater. You can breakfast in the dinning room or on the sunny terrace, with its commanding views of the mountains. There is a small pool at the back of the hotel with a few sun loungers to relax on.

Hotel La Residencia
This award-winning hotel is one of the most luxurious on the island of Mallorca. Made from an amalgamation of two old manor houses, nowadays La Residencia is an exclusive hotel and spa resort. Set in 30 acres of olive and citrus groves this is an ideal place to relax and unwind. The hotel’s interior is elegantly finished in traditional Mallorcan style creating a cool, refined atmosphere.
There are numerous rooms and suites at the hotel, including up to four suites with a private pool. You can even rent your own three bedroom villa complete with its own heated pool.
As you would expect from such an outstanding hotel, the facilities on offer here are abundant, and include: tennis courts (with private instruction available); a gym (with a personal trainer), plus yoga, tai chi and aqua-aerobic classes. There are three pools to choose from, including two outdoors and one indoors. If you want to take off into the mountains on bikes, you can borrow these from the hotel. The spa was voted the Best Hotel Spa in Europe in 2007 and offers numerous facial and body treatments as well as special all day packages.
There two restaurants at la Residencia. Firstly, there is the formal El Olivio restaurant – a gourmet treat and considered by some to be one of the best restaurants on the island. Secondly, there is the more casual Son Fony restaurant (near the pool area) which serves Mediterranean cuisine using fresh local produce.
There are several pleasant touches La Residencia, including the home-made marmalade prepared from the hotel’s own citrus trees or the flowers in the rooms from its well landscaped gardens. A stay here will be unforgettable.

Hotel Sa Pedrissa
Another ‘agroturismo’, Sa Pedrissa is a 17th century farmhouse turned hotel. The old stone building and outbuildings have been tastefully transformed into an immaculate nine room hotel. The building’s traditional interior has been lovingly restored to preserve its ambience. Outside in the beautiful gardens there is a pool and sun deck with great views of the Mediterranean Sea. A shady terrace next to the hotel has comfy wicker deck chairs and is a great place to relax.

Pension Miramar
This small family-run guesthouse has just nine rooms, but it is very charming and reasonably priced. Originally a 19th century farmhouse, it was converted into a pension in the 1950s, and has had several loyal customers ever since. Breakfast is served on the terrace (weather permitting) with its panoramic views of the sea. Dining at the Miramar is a simple affair and based on traditional Mediterranean cuisine.

Valldemossa and surrounding area
This hill-top town is just a 15 minutes drive from Palma. Valldemossa is best known for its monetary established by the Carthusian monks in the 14th century - one of the most visited sights in Mallorca.

Es Petit Hotel de Valldemossa

This traditional stone building has been carefully renovated to create a quaint hotel. It has just eight well appointed double rooms - some of them have a balcony with splendid views of the valley. There is a winter lounge with a bar and fireplace to relax in. During the summer you will probably prefer the terrace and garden where you can catch a cooling breeze.

Valldemossa Hotel
Set amongst 70,000 square metres of orange and olive groves, this chic rural hotel was once two 19th farmhouses. In 2004 they were transformed into this spectacular rural retreat. Accommodation at the Valldemossa is limited, but sumptuous, with just three double rooms and nine junior suites. The hotel’s interior is tastefully refined and sympathetic to the old stone buildings. Welcoming and friendly, the Valldemossa considers itself to be more of a home than a commercial hotel.
Outside there is a complex of terraces in the well landscaped gardens where you can relax in the sun or the shade – depending on your mood. There is a large pool with a poolside bar located in the garden. Indoors you’ll find a heated pool, sauna and Jacuzzi to relax in, as well as a spa where you can treat yourself to some pampering. The restaurant has a tempting a la carte menu, including a good selection for vegetarians.

Banyalbufar
South-west of Valldemossa towards the coast is the scenic village of Banyalbufar. It is only 25 kilometres away from the capital, but it is a world away from the usual resorts on Mallorca. This bit of the north-west coastline is unspoilt and a real pleasure with its terraced fields, winding narrow alleys and majestic views.

Hotel Mar i Vent
Hotel Mar i Vent has been a family run hotel since it was built in the 1940s. There are 29 well equipped rooms - the better ones have a small balcony and wonderful sea views. The large garden, with its terraces, spread down the hill to a lovely pool. From here the views out to sea are great. Tennis lovers will enjoy the hotel’s tennis court.
The restaurant serves home cooking using only fresh local produce. If you are too tired to eat in the restaurant - you can always get dinner through room service.

Hotel Sa Coma
A modern four story building the Hotel Sa Coma is a three star family run hotel. A quiet and welcoming place, accommodation includes 66 rooms. Nearly half of the rooms have en-suite facilities and balconies with sea views.
Inside the hotel there is a TV lounge and bar, as well as the restaurant. This serves a buffet breakfast (included with room) and in the evening it offers home cooked Mallorcan cuisine. Hotel Sa Baronia

This hotel was originally built as an extension to a 17th century grand manor. Today, after significant changes, it is a largish welcoming, hotel with a family atmosphere. Estellencs
A few kilometres down the coastline from Banyabufar, is the picturesque village of Estellencs. Similar to Banyabufar with its terraced fields and Moorish influences, Estellencs is another stunning village.
Hotel Nord
This unassuming little hotel, housed in a traditional Mallorcan stone building, is located right in Estellencs’ main square. Lovingly restored by its current owners, the Hotel Nord has just eight rooms. However, they are all well appointed and spacious – decorated in modern Mallorcan style.
The beautiful central courtyard is a great place to sit and relax. Breakfast is also served here. In the winter you can sit by the fire in the lounge and unwind. The Hotel Nord usually serves a homemade dinner in the evening. With notice, they well prepare something special for vegetarians. Nearby you’ll find some good places to eat, including a pizzeria.

Hotel Sa Palana
Another stone built Mallorcan house turned hotel, is the Sa Palana. This small family-run hotel has just four double and one quadruple room. All of them have a bathroom and magnificent views of the village, the mountains or the sea. The central lounge has a fireplace where you can relax after a long day’s hill walking. In the summer, the terrace in the garden it a great place to have breakfast (included with your room). Dinner is also served here – the cuisine is homemade Mallorcan dishes using fresh local produce. Down in the garden there is a neat little pool and patio where you can seek refuge from the heat of the day.

Galilea
Just a 20 minute drive (about 16 kilometres) from Palma, is Galilea. This small hamlet in the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains is near to some of the most popular hiking paths in Mallorca. It is also within a half an hour of the coast.
Scotts Galilea
The younger sibling of the Scotts Townhouse Hotel in Binissalem (see ?), Scotts Galilea is not a hotel in the traditional sense. It is more a collection of self-catering accommodation in beautiful tranquil surroundings. On offer are three 1 or 2 bedroom townhouses and seven studios – all immaculately presented and sumptuous. The interiors are well designed and modern, with an emphasis on comfort. All the accommodation comes with either a full kitchen or a kitchenette and a private terrace. This establishment is noted for the quality of its beds – including top of the line mattresses, all cotton linen and goose-down pillows. No wonder guests regularly oversleep.
The Scotts Galelia complex has an outdoor swimming pool, sauna and terrace with self-service bar. As each townhouse/studio has a kitchen (and comes with a generous welcoming hamper) there is no restaurant at the complex. However, there are two good places to eat within easy walking distance and a further four within a 10 minute drive. Scotts Galelia is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.

Puigpunyet
Further down the valley, through citrus and olive groves, you come to the small village of Puigpunyet.
Gran Hotel Son Net
On top of a hill, with excellent views down the valley, is the luxurious five star Gran Hotel Son Net. Originally a 17th century country manor, this imposing pink building has been tastefully restored to create one of Mallorca’s grandest hotels. Staying true to its origins, the Son Net is a beautiful example of classic Mallorcan styling using traditional materials such as stone, wood and tiles. There is a good collection of modern art at Son Net, including paintings from noted artists such as Marc Chagall and David Hockney.

The Son Net has an extensive range of accommodation on offer from deluxe double rooms, to a suite with private terrace, all the way up to a luxurious cottage with a private swimming pool. The rooms are all very elegant and refined. If you want to further pamper yourself, you can take advantage of some of the treatments available at the spa. Or, you can simply relax and unwind at the mammoth 30 metre outdoor pool. If you start to overheat, cool down with some ice-cream or a milkshake from the poolside bar.
There are two excellent restaurants at Son Net. There is the casual summertime El Gazebo restaurant near the pool. The more formal and elegant Oleum restaurant serves innovative Mallorcan dishes with a modern twist.

Port d’Andratx
Almost on the south-western tip of the Island of Mallorca, is the seaside town of Port d’Andratx. This pretty coastal harbour has become a popular resort.
Hotel Villa Italia

Once a grand 1920 mansion, the Hotel Villa Italia is today a lavish five star hotel. The decor is very grand and includes stuccoed ceiling, marble floors and hand-carved woodwork, all carefully restored from the original building. Outside the terraced garden offers sweeping views of the Mediterranean.
The hotel has both double rooms (some with a balcony) and up to six suites. The suites on the ground floor all have their own private terrace. The pool is located on the roof and has great views of the sea and the mountains as they reach the coastline. Inside you’ll find a small gym and a sauna. The restaurant, the Club Royal, serves regional specialities for both lunch and dinner. Or, you can get a snack from the bar and enjoy your meal out on the terrace.
