In most of the popular holiday resorts it is possible to spend the entire holiday eating nothing more adventurous than fish and chips or pizza. But whilst that will suit many it would be a sin to visit the island without trying a few of the local delicacies.
Although paella is traditionally a Valencian dish Mallorca has its own version of paella, otherwise known as arros sec (or dry rice). It normally consists of rice, vegetables, meat and seafood although other ingredients such as snails and rabbit can also be used. Snails are also a delicacy in their own right and are delicious cooked with the many fragrant local herbs.
Mallorca is renowned for its olive growing and olive oil is used extensively in cooking and salad dressings as well as being a delicious accompaniment to bread. Pa amb oli is a popular pre-cursor to a meal and consists of bread rubbed with tomato and seasoned with olive oil and salt. Garlic can also be rubbed on to the bread before the tomato, giving it an extra kick. As well as being a popular starter pa amb oli is also delicious as an accompaniment to a platter of local meats or cheeses.
Being a Mediterranean island Mallorca, of course, is justifiably well known for its fish and shellfish. Prawns from Soller are particularly prized (and sadly expensive) and are delicious simply grilled. If you fancy something a little more hearty then the fish stew is a must. The tapas concept has become something of a cliché in the UK with even Thai tapas joints springing up. If you want to taste some genuine Spanish tapas then Mallorca is the place to do it. What can beat a selection of croquettes of chicken or ham, prawns “pil-pil”, tortillas, some sliced sobrassada (cured sausage) and a little plate of tongue with capers, all washed down with a glass of local wine?
